After a month of non-stop blue skies and sun, the day came for the 87th YFC village show. The Facebook post said ‘Sunshine on order’ but typically for our British summer it rained and rained, stopped raining and then started raining again.
But that didn’t stop crowds of people turning out to see the competition entries, the stalls, the livestock and the dance show. And not forgetting the fell runners – it’s hard enough walking up and down the hills around here, let alone running – I was very impressed by them all.
The highlight of the show, for me anyway, was the ducking stool. Poor Malcolm from the Hare and Hounds offered his services, believing he would only be ducked a couple of times at the most. I won’t name the young farmer in charge, but each time Malcolm looked away he leant over and pulled the lever – and down Malcolm went. Even though his T-shirt said ‘Grumpy old man’ he was a great sport and didn’t moan about the numerous bruises all over his body!
After a couple of beers and a tasty burger it was time to go home. We will be back next year but hopefully without the rain. Well done to everyone for organising the show with such a great variety of things to see and do!
